Is it worth 33% more? Would you buy a book that features 10 pages of colour photos and pay a third more? If it was Norfolk Southern, Penn Central or even CN zebra stripes, you'd probably say no. But what if it's the yellow, blue, green, silver and red of VIA? My fourth book will include lots of photos.
In this season of political polling, this is...publishing polling. I'm trying to decide if my fourth book should include a colour section. If you have my last book, you can reflect on this question first hand, with the Cross-Canada Compendium in hand.
This is your chance to vote or comment. I truly appreciate your input on this!
Highball!

Given that your books are fairly data intensive, I would choose the black and white photos. For a "coffee table" / photo book I would think colour is a must, but yours are great in colour or in B&W.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much, Steve. I really appreciate your perspective. Duly noted. With VIA's limited palette, I think VIAphiles are well aware of the colours. (Not as if anyone is going to be surprised by a purple and orange unit or something!!)
ReplyDeleteYou're right, though - this book will again be data-dense, and photos will be in the 'worth a thousand words' category but most assuredly NOT a coffee-table book. Mr. Holland has already done that for us!

I always like colour. But it's not a selling point. I'd much rather have a well reproduced enlargement in B&W over a small colour version of the same. Go Big and B&W and we can colour our own :)
ReplyDeleteI liked the balance between the 2 in Cross Canada Compendium. I'd say include the most colorful and interesting photos in a color section, and the all black and white CN consists and striped units in a black and white section.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ian and Elijah for your thoughts. All these viewpoints are very, very helpful. When I start compiling my photo list, I'll incorporate your input!
ReplyDeleteMuch appreciated,
Eric
